# Short links

Every code holds a short link, such as `qr4events.co.uk/q/x7k2pq`. The last part is the **short code**.

## Copy the link

Use the copy button next to the short link, either in your list of codes or next to the preview. You can also put the link in emails or social posts: visits through it are counted like scans.

## Choose your own short code

When you make a code, you can type your own short code under **Address in the code**, such as `spring-expo`. It can use small letters, numbers and dashes, from 2 to 40 characters. Leave it blank and we'll make one up. We avoid characters that are easy to confuse, like 0 and o.

Short codes are unique across QR4Events, so a popular word may already be taken.

## Changing it later

 Warning

The short link is printed in the pattern. If you change it, **codes already printed with the old link stop working**. The builder asks you to confirm if the code has had scans.

To send people somewhere else, [change the destination](https://qr4events.co.uk/help/change-where-a-code-goes) instead. That never breaks printed codes.
